For an active, company-wide knowledge management, a flexible document retrieval facility is key. Today available technology, however, works only on alphanumeric data reasonably well; embedded image and measured data are ignored.

Fig.: key information is hidden in binary data!
Large bodies of measuring data and images are evaluated once by the author, they are described textually in the documents, and henceforth they will be ignored. However, the text body on which the DMS searches always has been formulated by the author with some specific task in mind - the task which appeared relevant at the time of writing. A large part of the original information, therefore, is unavailable for the company.
An example.
Let us assume that, during clinical tests of a new drug, the bilirubin level
is discussed 24 and 48 hours after medication.
Observations inbetween, such as after 1.5 or 7 hours,
are not retrievable from the
text. And the question "What was the maximum bilirubin level observed
17 hours after medication?" cannot be answered.
Only the lab assistant in charge knows on which lab PC the corresponding
original data reside. And even s/he has no way to do an overall and flexible
search, but has to inspect each and every data series manually.
Profit loss of millions of Dollars can be the consequence if, due to missing
information, e.g., drug approval is delayed by some weeks.
Linked to a DMS, rasdaman can answer queries on arbitrary measuring data at any
time, flexibly, and fast. A simple integration based on open, standards
conformant interfaces guarantees cost effective deployment and highest return
of investment.
