When working with earth observation data currently every user makes a local copy of the working set of data. Centralised access to a pool of data stored is possible, but tedious, complex, and error prone for the user. User-oriented data selection and intelligent customization is not possible.

rasdaman enables access to a centralised database with application specific selection of current data according to the user's need. Access control as usual with database management systems enables safe concurrent multi-user access to the data. The latest processed data can be inserted in the database und is accessible to other users immediately.
The intelligent query capabilities of rasdaman support content based retrieval of data and drastically reduce the amount of data transferred over the net by spatial and content based preselection. A client/server architecture curbs down requirements on the user's desktop. Only relevant data is stored there.
Example: Using rasdaman remote sensing data meeting the following criteria can be selected from a database: containing a 15 mile area around Munich not covered by clouds. Additionally there should be no dangerous ozone concentration in the city. Only data sets meeting this criteria and only the relevant areas in these data sets are transferred to the client.
rasdaman enables preselection of relevant data directly at the data source on the server. Central access to a pool of data greatly eases the tasks of updating and backup.
