Exploration activities for crude oil, natural gas, water and other natural ressources create a huge amount of data. The multidimensional structure of this data ranging from 1D to 4D is not adequately supported by current database management systems.
The multidimensional raster database system rasdaman supports arrays of arbitrary dimensionality and base type. A declarative query language supports operations on these arrays such as trimming or classification. Intelligent retrieval in a multitude of data sets is possible. The multidimensional modelling capabilities using rasdaman enable implementation of complex analysis software with a reasonably small effort.

Example: Out of a 3D-simulation run over time the time window is selected, in which in a 300ft area around the borehole the highest concentration of crude oil is found. Only the subcube containing the data around the borehole is relevant.
Handling data of a multitude of dimensionalities with one query language enables a large set of analytical queries on combinations of data of different dimensionalities. Central data storage offers simple backup and access to the most current data for the engineers.
